Crescent - Shubha Taparia
September 2021 - February 2022

Introduced by Head of Programme at FACT Liverpool, Maitreyi Maheshwari, artist Shubha Taparia was joined in conversation by Director of The Box Plymouth, Nicoletta Lambertucci, at UNIT 7 London. The dialogue provided a unique insight into Taparia’s latest monumental installation. The Mayor of Brent, Councillor Lia Colacicco, honoured the event with her presence.

After the interview, guests were invited into a separate area of UNIT 7 for an informal brunch hosted by the artist. Guests discovered other separate but thematically connected works by Taparia, as well as a screening of her 2019 film "Performance," filmed at The Averard Hotel, London.

'CRESCENT' IS A TOWERING EXTENSION OF TAPARIA'S EXPLORATION OF THE THEMES OF CHANGE, TRANSITION AND IMPERMANENCE, AND THEIR DUALITIES IN CONTEXT OF THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT. A CHANCE ENCOUNTER WITH JOHN NASH’S TERRACE REDEVELOPMENT IN LONDON PROMPTED THE ARTIST TO REIMAGINE AND RECONTEXTUALISE THE INTERIM LANDSCAPE, TAKING FORM IN AN 18M LONG, 6M TALL MONUMENTAL WORK THAT MIRRORS THE BUILDING SITE. A FAMILIAR SCAFFOLD STRUCTURE VEILED BEHIND A DIAPHANOUS POLYURETHANE WRAP CURVING THROUGH THE LENGTH OF THE GALLERY, THE INSTALLATION IS BACKLIT TO CREATE AN ENIGMATIC DISPLAY OF SHAPES AND SHADOWS.
